The magnitude 6.1 earthquake which hit Japan’s Osaka area earlier this week, tragically killing four people and injuring hundreds more, also had a catastrophic effect on the city’s infrastructure, creating a knock-on effect for many businesses operating in the area.
Several electronics firms have plants in Osaka, one of Japan’s biggest commercial hubs. Panasonic was forced to temporarily close down three of its facilities situated in the city’s surrounding area, due to damaged water mains and misaligned equipment, but said the damage was not extensive. Production at the factories has since resumed.
Meanwhile, a Sharp LCD plant in the area — jointly owned with parent company Foxconn (a.k.a. Hon Hai Precision Industry) — had to be closed for safety checks, but is now believed to be fully operational again. Sharp reported that its other facilities in the area were unaffected by the disaster.
No tsunami warning has been issued following the earthquake.
