LG’s Transparent Antenna and Automotive Glass

What Display Daily thinks: It’s an interesting thing, the automotive display business. Mostly because it is not about the displays. It’s about whole host of other opportunities that have to coalesce because if they don’t, it makes it difficult to remain competitive on displays.

We already know that there is a juxtaposition that can be made with battery technology and displays, but let’s be frank, there has to be more. It may not be enough to produce cockpit electronics for infotainment systems and dashboards. That’s a strategic consideration for any display manufacturer getting into the automotive supply chain.

It may also be that the layers of regulations and standards, the hoops that have to be jumped through, mean that you can’t just put your hopes into one component area, the display. So, glass technologies is a logical step. Or, maybe, it’s just transparency, in all its component forms, like an antenna here, or sensor there.

LG and Auto Glass Giant to Showcase Cutting-Edge Vehicle Antenna at CES 2024

LG Electronics has partnered with leading automotive glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain Sekurit to develop an innovative transparent antenna for vehicles. The technology will be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next month.

The transparent antenna film can be seamlessly integrated into glass surfaces, marking a shift away from traditional shark-fin antennas. Its slim and adaptable design provides automakers greater customizability and scalability options.

Industry sources highlight the antenna’s versatility, with variations that allow both attachable “on-glass” and insertable “in-glass” configurations. This makes the antenna compatible with a wide range of automotive glass pieces and designs, including glass roofs.

The technology supports various critical communications systems, including 5G, satellite and GPS, enabling continuous connectivity despite increasing data demands. The antenna’s inconspicuous integration is also said to enhance overall vehicle aesthetics.

LG has heavily invested in the antenna’s development, securing over 80 patents focused on improving transparency and conductivity. The product signifies LG’s commitment to spearheading innovation in the vehicular communications domain.

LG currently leads the global telematics market with a 23.8% market share according to third-quarter data.
