LGD Overtakes Rivals Thanks to iPhone 6

LG Display edged out Samsung Display to become the world’s leading sub-9″ display vendor in Q4’14, IHS DisplaySearch data shows. The company had an 18.7% market share, compared to SDC’s 15.7% share. Japan Display was also at 18.7%, but its revenue was slightly lower than LGD’s ($2.1 billion versus $2.17 billion).

SDC had led the sub-9″ category in Q1’14, with a 24% share, followed by Sharp (14.5%) and Japan Display (12.4%), while LGD was well behind, at 11.4%.

Apple’s iPhone 6, which uses panels from LDG and Japan Display, was named as the likely reason for the share shake-up, while Samsung Electronics’ (which takes 80% of SDC’s mobile panels) mobile sales disappointed in 2014.
