What They Say
The Elec has continued to drip feed information (well, rumours, really!) about the expected switch by Apple to OLEDs for its iPads. As we reported last week, Samsung has started developing tandem structures for OLEDs for this application. (Samsung Display Begins Two-stack Tandem OLED development to win iPad order) The Elec has now said that LG is developing 12.9″ exclusively and that LG and Samsung are both working on 11″ models. It also said that the panels would use LTPO backplanes.
The blog said that BOE is not yet involved, but is aiming to compete for supply.
Both LG & Samsung are said to be planning to use G6 fabs initially, with a switch to G8.5 fabs later.
What We Think
Earlier, the Elec said that the issue between Samsung and Apple was cost. That could explain the different supply chain for the two sizes. The 12.9″ iPad Pro is already an expensive option, because of the current miniLED display, so Apple is probably prepared to pay more. LG has been working on tandem OLEDs for automotive applications.
By later today, there will be more news after Apple’s event. (BR)
