LG Display is laying claim to the development of the world’s first stretchable display, capable of expanding by 50%. The 12-inch display stretches to 18 inches with a high resolution (100 ppi) and full RGB color. The stretchability has doubled from an earlier prototype, moving from 20% to 50%.
It uses a special silicon substrate, originally used in contact lenses, and MicroLEDs (up to 40 micrometers), which allow it to endure over 10,000 stretches while maintaining image quality under extreme conditions, according to LG Display.
The display can conform to irregular surfaces, like skin or clothing, and has potential uses across multiple fields, including fashion, wearables, and automotive. Concepts include wearable firefighter uniforms displaying real-time information and convex automotive panels.
This development is part of a South Korean national project led by LG Display and 19 other organizations, supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. The initiative aims to advance display technologies for next-generation uses.
