Leyard and Dimenco to Develop 108” No-Glasses 3D LED Display

At InfoComm 2015, look for a giant 108” LED display that is offering no-glasses 3D content. That is the plan according to Dimenco and Leyard Photoelectrics.

To get there, Leyard, which claims to be the world’s largest LED wall manufacturer, has now signed a technology license agreement with Dimenco, an innovator in glasses-free 3D technology. Leyard has also acquired an equity position in Dimenco, which will fund technology development supporting Dimenco’s growth plans.

“The trust that Leyard has in our company has been demonstrated by investing in Dimenco to help us realize our ambition to introduce No-Glasses 3D to anyone, everywhere, and on any device”, noted Maarten Tobias CEO of Dimenco.

3D LED walls have been shown before, but almost all have been glasses-based and placed patterned polarizers over the LED array. The Dimenco/Leyard team will offer a no-glasses 3D experience leveraging Dimenco’s expertise in designing, developing and manufacturing the optical layer needed to direct images into viewer’s left or right eyes.

Dimenco has been perfecting this technology for a number of years but for LCD displays. The LED wall will require a new design with the optical layer fabricated as a single 108” component. This will be bonded to a series of 1.25 mm LED modules to create the display.

We suspect the optical layer will not have a permanent bonding to facilitate the movement of the display. Alignment of the optical layer to the LEDs is done in software.

Tobias noted that the company thinks, “The main application in the short term is advertising viewing, although you can understand that there are applications which could include longer viewing. We are exploring this as well”.

Content will be created in the same way it is for no-glasses LCD displays as 2D plus a depth map that is rendered into multi-view images by the Dimenco processor. This can then be fed directly to the display wall controller. – Chris Chinnock
