According to industry sources in Taiwan, global demand for the LED chipsused in fine pixel pitch displays will see an increase of 30-40% this year. The information was reported by Digitimes.
The forecast growth is based on the increasing demand for these displays and the increasing density of LED chips per unit of display area, to meet the smaller pixel pitches being required.
MLS, one of China’s largest LED packaging service providers, estimates that the demand for 2017 will be 90-100 billion chips. This is a sizeable rise compared to 2016 where the demand was 60 billion chips.
MLS is planning to expand its annual packaging capacity to 100-150 billion LED chips to meet the growing demand. Some 60-70% of the additional capacity will be for fine pixel pitch displays. For these displays, this year MLS is aiming to increase its global market share from last year’s 50% to over 60%.
Also expanding production capacity mainly for fine pixel pitch LED displays, is China-based Foshan Nationstar Optoelectronics and Shenzhen Kinglight.
Everlight Electronics has also started production in a new central Taiwan factory for fine pixel pitch LED displays, LED automotive lighting and infrared LED products.
