Korean Makers Invest in Flexible OLED Technology

The glass-based AMOLED display market will be worth almost $23 billion in 2022. To adapt to new market conditions, both Samsung Display and LG Display are ramping production capacity of plastic-based OLED displays, writes IDTechEx, in a new report. The firm expects the plastic OLED display market to almost double in value in 2016, from $1.5 billion this year to $2.9 billion.

The plastic-based OLED display market is not reaching its full potential – largely because the demand for the Galaxy S6 Edge was higher than expected, but there was not enough supply of the curved plastic displays. The glass-based OLED display market is not growing as quickly as previously expected. Due to competition from Chinese makers, IDTechEx expects prices to fall quickly. Thus, OLED technology is in danger of being commoditised. This situation is driving Korean OLED makers to invest more in plastic and flexible displays.

Smartphones and wearables will be the main applications for plastic OLED displays, at first. However, as the technology matures it will be possible to use those displays in other types of devices. Adding segments such as tablets and automotive displays, the market for plastic and flexible OLEDs will be worth more than $16 billion by 2020.
