Korea’s Yonhap News reports that the country’s Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning has chosen the ATSC 3.0 standard for UltraHD TV broadcasts, over DVB-T2. UHD transmissions are expected to begin in February 2017. So far, most UHD TVs manufactured in Korea have been DVB-T2 sets; these will require a separate STB to receive ATSC signals. A ministry official said that ATSC 3.0 was chosen as “the technology provides better transmission quality for viewers.” Korean broadcast industry experts attended a demonstration of ATSC 3.0 in Las Vegas earlier this year.
Analyst Comment
I suspect that the adoption of ATSC 3.0 means that the Korean TV and component makers will have a domestic market in which they can develop products that are also saleable in the US market. (BR)
