JOLED plans to create a research and development centre in spring next year, where work will be done to establish technologies for mid-size OLED mass production.
Established by Sony and Panasonic, JOLED is targeting 10″ – 20″ displays for use in tablets and notebooks. It aims to begin pilot production in the spring and ship samples next year. An investment decision on mass production will be taken in 2017, according to Japan’s Nikkei newspaper. Production will begin in 2018.
JOLED is investigating OLED printing. Its R&D centre will be at the Ishikawa Prefecture plant of its main shareholder, Japan Display. The centre will use 50 engineers from two other JOLED facilities. Up to ¥20 billion ($160 million) will be invested in the plant, which will include a G4.5 pilot line.
