According to reports, Japan Display (JDI) is planning to invest ¥300 billion ($2.5 billion) over the next five years to expand production of high-resolution LCD smartphone panels.
JDI is expected to invest in an existing plant in Chiba Prefecture and a factory due to open next year in Ishikawa Prefecture to double output capacity for the panels. The new capacity will be the equivalent of 70,000 Gen 6 glass substrates per month. This would bring total capacity to enough panels for 500 million smartphones a year.
