Japan Tablet Shipments Experience Fall for the First Time

While tablets shipments in Japan fell by 9.8% last year, Apple’s iPad still dominates the market. There were 8.51 million tablets shipped in Japan last year, which was a fall of 9.8% compared to 2015. This represented the first annual decline, according to Japan-based MM Research Institute.

Apple took 40.9% of the shipments, followed by Huawei Technologies (21.6%), NEC/Lenovo (8.5%), Fujitsu (6%) and Asus (5.4%). However, in the last quarter, the other manufacturers increased their shares and Apple fell to 38.2%, but still dominated. Figures by IDC.

Business use of tablets has been disappointing, due to the additional costs involved with adjusting interfaces, adding software applications and designing security mechanisms. The education segment is likely to be the source of growth in the tablet market in Japan.
