Japan Display Would Not Ignore Sharp Deal

Mitsuru Homma, head of Japan Display (JDI), has said that the company would not ignore the possibility of a partnership with rival Sharp.

The news comes shortly after the announcement that JDI’s top shareholder, the INCJ, would invest in Sharp if it were asked to do so (INCJ Would Invest in Sharp). Previous rumours have suggested that Sharp is seeking a buyer for its LCD business, usually named as Foxconn.

“If there are such discussions, we would not say no, from the perspective of protecting Japan’s manufacturing technology”, said Homma. He added, “I believe they have extremely valuable technology, manufacturing technology that we don’t have”.

Homma also said that letting Sharp’s technology be taken by a third (non-Japanese) party would pose a greater threat to JDI.
