The metal-body Galaxy Alpha will be discontinued under pressure from low-cost devices, according to Korea’s ET News.
Samsung tellingly chose to release a low-cost smartphone – the Galaxy A5 – in late 2014, without a flagship launch at CES (we expect to see the Galaxy S6 at MWC – TA). ET News believes that this points to a change in the company’s mobile strategy, an attempt to appeal to the growing demand for affordable handsets
The A5 has similar specifications to the Galaxy Alpha (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 32), and this – it is believed – indicates that production of the metal-body device will come to a halt. A source told ET News, “I understand that the Galaxy Alpha will be produced until the materials currently in inventory are used up… Its production will end by early February”.
