There have been rumours circulating this week suggesting that Lenovo is close to signing a deal to acquire Blackberry. Two sources in the Canadian press reported the rumours, saying that an offer could come as soon as this week.
Lenovo has been linked to Blackberry before, when it was reported a year ago that Blackberry was considering strategic options for its future (Display Monitor Vol 20 No 31). Since then, Lenovo has acquired the Motorola Mobility business from Google (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 5). The reports suggest that any potential deal between Lenovo and Blackberry could face opposition from Canada’s competition regulators because of the size of the Canadian company, though it might be possible that Lenovo would only be interested in acquiring the handset business.
