A start-up called Grabb-It, based in San Francisco, United States, has launched a digital out-of-home advertising platform which involves installing projection equipment in cars and using it to display adverts in rear passenger windows.
The platform is being targeted at drivers of delivery vehicles and ride-share vehicles like Uber or Lyft, beaming adverts on to the rear passenger window while the vehicle is not transporting a fare, as a way for them to earn some extra money on top of their usual earnings, which the company estimates at around $300 a month based on 40 hours of driving per week.
A thin layer of material custom-cut to the shape of the window is used to display advertising and allows for the window to be opened when a passenger is riding in the car. Grabb-It is also designed to detect the vehicle’s location and adjust its displayed advertising on the fly to reflect businesses within the current vicinity.
Grabb-It is part of Y Combinator’s Summer 2018 class. The start-up also received a $100,000 investment from Lyft director Sean Aggarwal.
