Technavio has published a new report titled “Global Flexible Displays Market 2017-2021” which predicts that the market is projected to grow to $16.66 billion by 2021, at a CAGR of more than 35% over the forecast period. Sunil Kumar Singh, a lead analyst at Technavio for displays research, explained that flexible displays are next-generation thin electronic display screens that are lightweight, foldable and bendable.
The report categorises the global flexible displays market into OLED, EPD and LCD.
Key vendors of OLED displays are Samsung Display and LG Display, both of are focusing on rapidly introducing flexible OLED displays, which can be bent, rolled, and stretched. The demand for thinner, flexible displays with wider viewing angles is driving the demand for these displays. This segment generates close to 77% of the overall market revenue and is expected to show robust growth over the forecast period.
Flexible Electronic Paper Displays (EPDs) are a relatively new technology, and these displays provide monochrome support and reduce the weight of the display by up to 50%. Full colour EPDs are in development and awaiting commercialisation on a large scale. This segment of the market is forecast to grow with a CAGR of over 17% over the forecast period.
For LCD-based flexible display products, the demand is expected to be minimal due to the complexity of production. The segment is projected to grow at a CAGR of close to 6% over the forecast period.
