The Fremont Street Experience LED canopy in downtown Las Vegas is to get a facelift, upgrading its current brightness from 700cd/m², meaning the display can be operated—and visible—continuously rather than just at night time. The project is expected to cost around $33 million, with investments from the city and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

I’ve been watching this display since the days when it was incandescent bulbs! In the 1990s, I was staying in the 4 Queens Hotel (pictured) during Comdex, and writing about power-saving monitors. Looking out of my window highlighted to me the strangeness of all this effort to make monitors use less power when Downtown Las Vegas looked like daylight! (BR)
