Fraunhofer Investigates Flexible Lighting

Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding an OLED project at Fraunhofer FEP. The R2D2 project will investigate production processes and technologies for manufacturing flexible OLEDs.

R2D2 is primarily focused on lighting applications. These types of OLEDs have been fabricated on rigid glass substrates in the past. Fraunhofer believes that OLED lights will only penetrate the general lighting market if i) the high production costs of the technology can be reduced, and ii) if new fields of application and design can be opened up.

As well as piecewise manufacturing, roll-to-roll technology will be pursued. Advantages, disadvantages and synergies of different manufacturing concepts will be identified. At the same time, the project will address OLED issues such as durability, efficiency and brightness uniformity.

BMBF is providing €5.9 million for the project over two years.
