What They Say
Yesterday, we covered reports of strong pre-sales for Samsung’s new foldable smartphones and just after we published (of course!), DSCC said that it had released an update to its Foldable/Rollable Display Shipment report. The firm has upgraded its forecast and it quantifies foldable smartphone panel shipment/procurement numbers by 14% in 2021 to 10.4M and by 16% to 18.7M in 2022. Foldable smartphone panels are expected to up 220% in 2021 and 80% in 2022.
As well as the established pattern of brands focusing on the high end because of chip shortages and DSCC said that Chinese brands Huawei and Honor are getting more aggressive in foldables than it previously estimated. In addition, Samsung has been more aggressive than expected with the Z Flip 3 pricing and discounts on both new models. The panel procurement forecast is 16% higher for the Z Flip 3 and by >16% for the Z Fold 3.
What We Think
I’m always happy to see forecasts being upgraded when markets grow a bit faster than expected! (BR)
