Diodes Incorporated’s New 2-Channel LED Driver for Digital Signage

Diodes Incorporated has introduced a new 12-channel LED driver, the AL58221. The company’s been seeing traction for its products in automotive LED applications, but expects this new product to give it new opportunities in digital signage. The company is also expecting further opportunities in architectural lighting systems, and LCD backlighting.

This new driver features 12 open-drain outputs, rated to 24V and can sink up to 60mA of current. It operates over a 3V to 5.5V input range and uses adaptive pulse density modulation (APDM) to reduce IOUT distortion and improve visual refresh rates. The AL58221 allows independent programming of each channel’s average output current through a digital interface and uses a 10MHz data clock input to reduce EMI.

The AL58221 also supports a two-wire serial interface for sending grayscale data and controlling various functions. it has a visual refresh rate of over 1,000Hz at 16-bit and over 256kHz at 8-bit grayscale. It can be used for LED video signage, variable messaging signs, architectural lighting systems, and LCD backlighting.

The AL58221 is available in a TSSOP-24EP package at a price of $0.37 in 1,000-piece quantities.
