The plan to convert New York City’s public payphones – now largely obsolete – into internet access centres (10,000 Touchscreens for New York) will begin this year. Each of the new kiosks will be 3m tall, with an Android tablet inside offering free internet access, 24/7. There will also be a microphone to make free voice calls, a USB outlet to charge a smartphone and a 55″ touchscreen. Initial plans were to install 10,000 units, but this has since been lowered to 7,500. Details are still being finalised.
