What They Say
We reported on some market research among US consumers by Hub Entertainment Research a couple of weeks ago. (Research: 76% US homes have smart TV) The 8K Association followed up the news and got a bit more background on the particular issue of the trends in the desire for 8K. The article reports that while 14% said that they planned to go 8K this year, that was up from just 10% last year, a positive trend.
What We Think
As the article highlights, the absolute results from this kind of survey have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Consumers often say they will do something, but don’t actually do so. However, regular polling with a structured methodology can give a clear view of the trend.
For a number of years, we surveyed pricing in the European display market. We would have liked to have got the kind of POS data that big companies like GfK could get, but that was not possible. So we followed a very strict monthly methodology collecting prices over many markets and millions over a year, using ‘web scraping’. We had feedback from those that also bought the (very expensive) GfK POS data that our trend data matched theirs very accurately. Although our price data differed by a few percent, once you took that offset into account, you could replace their data with ours. (BR)
