In a formal letter addressed to US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Congressman John Moolenaar, Chairman of the House Select Committee on the CCP, expressed grave concerns over the growing dominance of two Chinese companies—BOE Technology Group (BOE) and Tianma Microelectronics (Tianma)—in the global display industry. Moolenaar urged the Department of Defense to place these companies on the Chinese Military Companies List, warning that their influence presents a significant risk to US national security.

Moolenaar’s letter highlights the expanding role of display technologies in advanced US military systems, including weapons like Javelin missiles and drones. He warns that if trade with China were disrupted, the production of these critical systems could come to a halt, increasing the need for the US to reduce reliance on Chinese display technologies.

The letter outlines how Chinese state subsidies have allowed BOE and Tianma to dominate the market for key display technologies, such as liquid crystal display (LCD) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED). According to Moolenaar, this dominance is part of China’s broader strategy to influence global supply chains and leverage its economic power in ways that threaten US military competitiveness.

Moolenaar also pointed out that both companies have ties to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and operate within a military-civil fusion enterprise zone. He called on the Pentagon to act swiftly in addressing the risks posed by these companies and to develop a plan to reduce US dependence on Chinese displays.

The letter adds to the growing debate over the national security implications of China’s influence in key technological sectors, including the potential risks to supply chain stability in the event of escalating tensions between the US and China.
