Comcast Enhances 4K Streaming for Summer Olympics in Paris

Comcast is set to enhance its 4K streaming for the Summer Olympics in Paris, offering improved image quality, enhanced audio, and near-live delivery. This feature will be available to X1 customers with 4K-capable boxes and 4K/HDR-capable TVs on USA Network’s 24/7 Olympics coverage.

X1 users can find the enhanced 4K content in X1’s Olympics destination, which also provides access to NBCU’s coverage across NBC, E!, CNBC, Golf Channel, Telemundo, Universo, two new Paris Extra channels, and streaming via Peacock. Viewers can customize their experience by tagging favorite sports, a feature also available on the Xfinity Stream app.

The enhanced 4K stream includes more pixels, Dolby Vision HDR, and Dolby Atmos audio. This format, which debuted during Super Bowl LVII, packs 66% more bits than standard 4K, with a latency of about 10 seconds behind live action. The high-fidelity stream requires speeds of 25-35 Mbit/s and uses high-bitrate HEVC compression.

Comcast tested this enhanced 4K with employees in the US and Sky in Europe during Super Bowl LVII. Moving forward, this will be Comcast’s new standard for live sports in 4K on X1.

For the Summer Games, X1 will feature an interactive schedule of all live and upcoming events, allowing viewers to tune in directly, set reminders, and record events. AI-assisted catch-up highlights will also be available.

On Xfinity Flex and the Xumo Stream Box, Comcast will feature an Olympics destination with Peacock’s extensive coverage and new multi-view feature, along with Olympic content from other sources like YouTube, Netflix, Apple TV+, Max, and Amazon Prime Video.
