What They Say
The Elec has a detailed round-up on the topic of barriers for foldable smartphones and highlighted that there is a significant move to Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG). The article details the suppliers for many of the foldable devices.
Device | Inside Display supplier | Outside Display supplier |
Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 2 | Samsung 8.01″ | CSOT 6.52″ |
Vivo | Samsung 8″ | BOE |
Honor Magic Fold | BOE 8.03″ | BOE 6.45″ |
7.6″ | ||
Oppo | Samsung 7.1″ LTPO | BOE 5.45″ |
The Honor Magic Fold is said to be using a BOE display with UTG, for the first time.
The site reported that Corning’s UTG is 50µm thick compared to 30µm for Schott, which is the only supplier so far and Samsung is said to be looking for a firm to process the glass. It also claimed that Corning has a low yield at the moment.
What We Think
As we have reported before, Samsung Display has, so far, been the exclusive supplier of OLEDs with UTG and its exclusive customer is Samsung Electronics. That will change as the firm starts to supply others in the second half of this year. Low yield at this stage wouldn’t be a surprise. It has been reported in the past that the yield from processing Schott glass was as low as 50%. (BR)
