My kid brother has recently learned the word deluge, and thinks that if I write this article, I can get him a free OLED gaming monitor. What can I say, he’s family. But, even deluge is not the right word, CES 2025 may just have a flood of new 27-inch 4K OLED gaming monitors, and I’m honestly intrigued. Three big players—Asus, Samsung, and MSI—have each rolled out models that hit 3840×2160 resolution at a 240Hz refresh rate, plus a super-fast 0.03ms response time. They’re all based on fourth-generation QD-OLED panels, so you can expect deep blacks, vivid colors, and less risk of burn-in than older OLEDs.
These monitors aren’t just for hardcore gamers, though. With VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification and 99% DCI-P3 coverage, they also make sense for anyone doing creative work or tasks that need high color accuracy. I would really like to know how much of a crossover there is between these gaming monitors and professional monitors.
Asus and MSI are offering warranties with burn-in protection, which might ease the usual worries about OLED longevity. And if you’re tired of messing around with compression, some models come with DisplayPort 2.1a (UHBR20), which basically gives you enough bandwidth (up to 80Gbps) to run 4K at 240Hz without extra fuss.
Pricing isn’t official, but rumors point to a range of $1,500–$2,000. That’s not cheap, but if you’re serious about gaming or creative work, these monitors could be worth the splurge. I suspect that Samsung is making a big push with its QD-OLED gaming panels to build some momentum for OLED in IT. Where the PC gamers go, the rest of the IT industry follows, if not to the same extreme levels and premium pricing. So, these gaming monitors are a lure for more mainstream OLED monitors. Still not cheap, but we’ll see how it goes. PC gaming was a classless passtime once, a hobbyists thing, but with the costs involved it feels like it is more of a privileged user base. I wonder how many twenty somethings have lost valuable dating finance because they have fallen in love with Nvidia graphics cards and high-end gaming monitors?
Maybe that is why Samsung is going one step further at CES 2025 by unveiling several new monitors. The Odyssey OLED G8 (G81SF) is the company’s first 4K OLED with a 240Hz refresh rate and a 0.03ms GtG response time. Meanwhile, the Odyssey OLED G6 (G60SF) offers a QHD resolution running at a striking 500Hz, giving gamers an incredibly fluid experience. Both support AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and DisplayHDR True Black 400, which should deliver deep contrast and tear-free gameplay.
Samsung is also revealing the Smart Monitor M9 (M90SF), an AI-powered display that uses AI Picture Optimizer and 4K AI Upscaling Pro to enhance visuals for gaming and streaming. On top of that, the Odyssey 3D (G90XF) introduces an AI-driven 3D mode capable of converting 2D content into 3D without requiring special glasses. Creators can look to the ViewFinity S8 (S80UD), a 37-inch 4K monitor with around 34% more screen real estate than its predecessor, 99% sRGB coverage, and built-in KVM for easier workflow management. Samsung hasn’t revealed pricing or exact launch dates for these displays, but they generally appear on shelves a few weeks after CES 2025, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them available before the end of this month. Supplementing ASUS, MSI, and others, Samsung is underscoring that this year’s CES is shaping up to be all about next-level OLED gaming and productivity.
