Following last week’s report that BOE Display will receive a $20 million government subsidy towards its G8.5 OLED fab in Hefei (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 42), the company has announced plans to build a G8 LTPS AMOLED fab in Chengdu. The new facility will have a monthly capacity of 45,000 glass substrates and will produce small sized AMOLED panels for mobile devices.
The new plant will also receive a state investment, from Chengdu’s municipal government. Construction of the new plant is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2015 and will require an investment of almost $3.6 billion. BOE is also currently constructing a G5.5 fab in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, where it plans to produce plastic-based flexible AMOLED panels using an LTPS backplane (Display Monitor Vol 20 No 46) and already has a G8.5 pilot line at Hefei producing 55″ UltraHD OLED panel prototypes, which were seen at SID 2014 (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 25).
