Apple has opened its own display division to develop new screens – at least, according to Bloomberg.
People with knowledge of the facility, which is based on Longtan, Taiwan, say that ‘at least’ 50 engineers and other workers are employed there. They are creating new screens for devices including the iPhone and iPad, with and were recruited from AUO and Qualcomm, which used to own the building. It was on this site that Qualcomm worked on its Mirasol display technology.
Bloomberg says that the lab was opened this year, as Apple aims to create thinner, lighter, brighter and more energy-efficient products. The focus is on LCD displays, but Apple is also apparently keen to move to OLED.
According to Bloomberg, which has seen records from the Hsinchu Science Park management office, Apple moved in to the building in April.
