BlackBerry Slims Workforce Again

BlackBerry

Blackberry will cut 200 jobs, in Ontario and Florida, to cut costs, it has said. The smartphone maker is seeking a return to profitability, putting more of its focus on its enterprise software business. The move follows earlier job losses last year (Blackberry Makes Global Job Cuts).

Although the company did not state what percentage of the workforce the move would affect, a filing showed that it had 6,225 employees as of February last year.

Cuts will affect 75 manufacturing jobs in Sunrise, Florida. A source told Reuters that many of the cuts in Canada were made to people working on the BB10 software in Blackberry’s headquarters. One of the company’s most prominent employees, Gary Klassen, has been confirmed as leaving in the latest round of job losses. Klassen was the inventor of the BBM messaging service.
