Viewing numbers for BBC’s online services are suffering due to Netflix. Nine years after launch, the iPlayer is used weekly by 13% of all adults in the UK, the same as for Netflix. For 16-34 year olds, the figure is 21%, although in this age range, Netflix is more popular. Also, while the average time spent with the BBC amongst people over 55 is almost 25 hours, for 16-34 year olds, the average is 11 hours a week.
The BBC Trust’s Charter Report finds that the BBC’s online services have grown from 41% in 2011 to 52% in 2016, however, this is lower than might be expected.
