AUO Shows AMOLED for 2016

AUO has used an event at its headquarters in Hsinchu, Taiwan to show new products and technologies. These included both large and small displays, and were not limited to LCD displays.

AUO CEO Paul PengA 65″ LCD TV panel was the largest product shown. It is described as borderless, due to the use of Gate on Array (GOA) technology; this can reduce the number of driver ICs used.

In addition to the 65″ panel, AUO also showed a 55″ video wall panel, with a 1.8mm pixel-to-pixel distance (shown at ISE in its suite (AUO Boosts Brightness but Shrinks Bezels), and a curved free-form 25″ panel for automotive use.

As well as LCD, AUO had AMOLED products, one of which was a foldable smartphone/tablet unit. It is 0.1mm thick and can apparently be folded more than 200,000 times, with a 4mm bend radius. A 5.5″ AMOLED panel, with 1920 x 1080 resolution, will be launched for VR headsets. The company also showed a 12.3″ AMOLED panel (1920 x 1080) and an AMOLED smartwatch panel.

AUO said that, in order to meet demand for high-end display products, its G6 LTPS plant in Kunshan, China will begin mass production in Q3’16. The line will have an initial monthly capacity of 25,000 substrates, and a total capacity of 60,000.
