Liao Wei-lun, President of AU Optronics’ video products business group has confirmed that the company will begin to ship 8K TV panels during the first half of 2018, according to Digitimes. Liao also commented that panel shipments for all-screen smartphone displays would increase this year as well.
Liao is reported to have stated that the company will focus on large-sized TV panels during 2018, as sales of 65″ and 70″ displays are expected to grow 40% and 50% year-on-year respectively, while the penetration of 65″ and above 8K TVs is predicted to reach 10% by 2020. Meanwhile, Ultra HD product penetration is anticipated to reach 40% this year, a 10% increase from 2017.
President of AUO’s mobile device business group, Chen Hung-hsiang, told Digitimes that all-screen smartphone panels are expected to make up 80% of the company’s total smartphone panel shipments in 2018, and also commented that the company would begin to ship panels for automotive use, including rear-view mirrors and infotainment devices, before the end of the year.
