What They Say
FlatPanelsHD reports that tvOS 14.5 from Apple will support both 24.000 and 23.976 fps without frame dropping. Currently, showing movies generated at 24fps at the broadcasting frequency of 23.976 fps (a hangover from the analogue days), means a dropped frame every 41 seconds and reversing to show 23.967 content at 24fps means a double frame at that time. Previously, the site reports, Apple supported the 23.976 fps mode only, but will now maintain the rate to its HDMI output.
The release date is set for March or April 2021 and was seeded as a Beta to developers on 16th Feb, according to MacRumors (where a number of happy commenters liked the framerate news!)
What We Think
This is one of those ‘picky picky’ points – apparently, once you get used to spotting this effect, it can be really annoying, so I don’t plan to try! Of course, getting the signal out of the HDMI is only the first step in producing really good content for the viewer, the display set and its video processing still has a big part to play after that.
