Apple TV Gets Plex DVR, iTunes Store Phased Out on 1st-Gen Box

Plex has added DVR support to its Apple TV app. The new feature allows users to record live TV, schedule recordings and play them back, all via the Apple TV.

Plex version 1.24 for tvOS also brings support for closed captions and various bug fixes. Those wanting to take advantage of the new features will need a Plex subscription, a compatible TV tuner and a Plex server with internal storage for recordings.

Apple has also announced that, due to security updates, the iTunes Store will be phased out on first-generation Apple TV devices as of May 25th 2018. The changes will also affect those with older Windows PCs running Vista or XP. Users will be able to continue to use iTunes as a media player, but will not be able make new purchases or redownload previous ones.
