Apple Says No New Mac Pro Until 2019

In an interview with TechCrunch, Apple’s Tom Boger revealed that the new Mac Pro will not be released until next year. “We want to be transparent and communicate openly with our pro community, so we want them to know that the Mac Pro is a 2019 product,” he said. “We know that there’s a lot of customers today that are making purchase decisions on the iMac Pro and whether or not they should wait for the Mac Pro”.

The second-generation Mac Pro launched way back in December 2013.

Apple has obviously taken notice of the fact that sales of the new iMac Pro may be hampered by current Mac Pro users holding out for an announcement. In terms of power and capabilities, the second-generation Mac Pro had already fallen behind years ago. Whether this delay will convert any Mac Pro fans to the all-in-one form-factor—and much higher price point—of the iMac Pro remains to be seen. (AF)

In the interview, that TechCrunch conducted with Apple, there was a lot of focus on professional workflows and how to ease ‘pain points’. There was talk of modularity and the teams at Apple were doing testing using external GPUs (eGPUs) (sometimes more than one) using Thunderbolt 3 interfaces and the blog sees Apple being very interested in eGPUs.
