Last month, we reported on a patent filed by Uber regarding the use of virtual reality technology in self-driving vehicles. (Uber Patents VR Experience for Self-Driving Car Passengers)
Now it appears that Apple are also getting in on the act, having filed their own patent for automotive VR applications designed to allow passengers in driverless vehicles to catch up on work, play games or enjoy their cars’ infotainment system via virtual reality rather than a fixed display, potentially eliminating the nausea that can come with looking at a screen for prolonged periods of time while in motion.
Apple’s patent shows a VR head-mounted display that connects directly to the controls of a self-driving vehicle. It is capable of creating visual cues to better match what is occurring on screen to the movements of the car—therefore, movements that the user will be feeling—in order to reduce motion sickness.
