Smartphone growth continues to slow worldwide – but demand for LTPS TFT-LCD screens for these products is on the rise.
According to IHS, LTPS TFT-LCD smartphone display shipments grew 31% YoY in the first half of 2015, to reach 251 million units. Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus drove this growth, representing 52% of shipments.
LTPS technology is used in premium smartphones; mainly those with 1920 x 1080 and 2560 x 1440 resolution. Display manufacturers are now investing in new facilities to raise capacity; not only for LTPS TFT-LCD, but also for high-resolution AMOLED displays.
“Apple adopted wider displays with higher resolution in its latest iPhone series, which has helped spur demand in LTPS TFT LCD displays”, said IHS’s Hiroshi Hayase. “Due to strong growth in LTPS TFT LCD for the iPhone, Apple competitors are also now increasing orders of high-resolution displays”.
