APAC Will Dominate DTV Rise to 2020

More than 1 billion digital TV homes will be added globally between 2010 and 2020, says Digital TV Research. The total will rise by 180% to 1.65 billion at the end of the forecast period – with 134 million new homes this year.

Global DTV penetration will reach 97.6% by the end of 2020, up from 40.5% at the end of 2010 and 67.2% at the end of 2014. 93 countries will be completely digital by this point, and about 124 will have penetration levels in excess of 90%.

APAC will see the largest rise, with 400 million new DTV homes between 2014 and 2020 (93 million this year), representing more than 65% of the 608 million DTV homes to be added worldwide in that time period. Sub-Saharan African will more than double its base and LATAM will almost double its total.

By the end of 2020, 27% of global DTV homes – 454 million – will be in China, by 169 million from 2014. India will overtake the USA to become the second-largest market, this year, doubling its total with 95 million new homes.

Fourth and fifth place will belong to Brazil and Russia, respectively. DTVR warns to ‘watch out for Indonesia’, which will jump from 23rd place in 2014 to sixth in 2020, adding 43 million households.
