The market for OLED panels in tablet PCs is set to grow significantly, driven by Apple.’s anticipated adoption of the technology in its upcoming iPad models, according to a report by South Korea’s UBI Research.
The research firm predicts that OLED panel shipments for tablet PCs will reach 28.4 million units by 2028, growing at an average annual rate of 24.1% from 12 million units in 2024. This marks a substantial increase from the relatively small shipments of 1.3 million units in 2022 and 1.8 million units in 2023.
The shift is largely attributed to Apple’s decision to incorporate OLED displays in its iPads scheduled for release this year. Samsung Display and LG Display are reportedly producing OLED panels for the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad models, respectively.
UBI Research expects the OLED market for tablet PCs to surge 6-7 times in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching 12 million units, following Apple’s adoption of the technology.
Panel manufacturers are also making aggressive investments to expand the application of OLED beyond tablet PCs to various IT products. Samsung Display recently invested in an 8.6G IT line, while China’s BOE followed suit. LG Display, meanwhile, conducted a paid-in capital increase to secure funds for IT line investment and plans to sell its Guangzhou LCD line.
