Meta, Qualcomm sign pact on custom virtual reality chips

What They Say

Reuters reports that Meta has signed a deal with Qualcomm who will provide custom chips for Meta’s Quest VR headsets. The companies’ engineering teams will collaborate on the platform.

The chipsets produced through the collaboration will not be exclusive to Meta, but will be optimized specifically for Quest’s system specifications, Meta spokesperson Tyler Yee told Reuters.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The agreement covers only VR devices, Yee said, and Meta will continue working to develop some of its own silicon solutions.

What We Think

Meta has deep pockets but must already have learned a lot about the best things to do (and to avoid) that should help Qualcomm. However, if Meta was to get a lot of advantage over other users of the chips, this could rebound on Qualcomm, I think. (BR)
