BOE and Honor in talks to apply 2-stack tandem OLED in smartphones

What They Say

The Elec has continued its coverage of tandem OLED developments and said that BOE has worked with Honor to look at applying the technology to smartphones later this year. The aim would be to reduce power consumption by up to 30%. Although LTPO was requested, BOE has suggested that as the LTPO reduced the consumption by less than the tandem structure, it was better to stick with LTPS.

The Elec speculates that the project might help BOE to develop technology and manufacturing to enable supply to Apple.

What We Think

The efficiency advantage of tandem structures come from the lower current density in the emitter materials. Up to now, the main advantage promoted seems to have been lifetime, also increased because of the lower charge density. Again as I understand it, the lifetime degradation of OLED materials is coulombic – that is to say it depends on the accumulated charge applied over time. Lifetime is not a particular challenge for most smartphones. (BR)
