MiniLED and MicroLEDs at Touch Taiwan

At least three companies will be at Touch Taiwan to showcase new miniLED and microLED devices: AUO, Innolux and Lextar. Here’s a summary of what each expects to show. Most of the miniLED activity is focused on backlights for improved performance or direct-view applications, while the microLED efforts are direct-view displays.

AUO says they will unveil a series if displays with miniLED backlight technology. This includes:

  • 65” 4K model with 1000 local dimming zones and 2500 nits of brightness and 144 Hz refresh rate
  • 32” 4K model with 1000 local dimming zones and 1500 nits of brightness and 144 Hz refresh rate
  • 17.3” 4K LTPS model with 1000 nits of brightness only 3.5mm thick
  • 2.9” 1688 PPI LTPS model with 2304 dimming zones for VR
  • 12.3” curved LTPS vehicle panel with 1000 nits of brightness

In its press release, AUO did not provide any details on the LED color technology (discrete RGB LED or blue LEDs with color conversion).

Innolux seems to be focusing on the signage and 8K markets for their miniLED efforts. They plan to produce:

  • 65” Mega-Zone 8K panels with miniLED backlight
  • 65” 8K panels with an active matrix miniLED backlight
  • 110” display for the PID market with an active matrix miniLED backlight

The panels are being jointly developed with Sharp along with a massive 120” 8K panel, but it is unclear if this is miniLED based. Innolux did not specific any details on the number of zones, brightness or LED technology being used.

Sharp and Innolux are both under the Foxconn umbrella and Sharp has been very active in developing elements of the full 8K ecosystem. They are very excited about the combination of 8K and 5G, for example.

Lextar Electronics announced several new miniLED devices that can now be readily used for miniLED backlights to support a range of applications (TV, gaming monitor, notebook, automotive display and VR applications). They also debuted a new miniLED backlight module.

  • UFI I-Mini Blue Flip Chip – miniLED backlight module using blue flip chip LEDs on a glass active-matrix backplane with integrated driver IC. The modules can achieve over 1000 dimmable zones and contrast of 1M:1. The color conversion technology is not specified.
  • UFI I-Mini Blue Chip on Glass – miniLED backlight module using blue Chip on Glass (COG) LEDs on a glass active-matrix backplane with integrated driver IC. A 2.9” module offers 2300 dimmable zones and high contrast for VR applications. Color conversion technology is not specified.
  • UFI I-Mini RGB – miniLED Direct View display with a 0.7mm pixel pitch
  • microLED – 5.1” active matrix transparent microLED display with 30,000 nits of brightness

Lextar will also offered packaged RGB LED devices. One is the new 4-in-one configuration (RGGB) using 1313 and 2121 sized LED plus a second package using 1010 and 1515 sized LEDs.

Since Bob will be at Touch Taiwan, hopefully he can provide a little more info on these developments while I am at IFA (hint – look for some new from the 8K Association at the event).
