tvOS 12 has been formally announced and will be released for Apple TV 4 and Apple TV 4K on September 17th. The upgrade brings a raft of new features, including Dolby Atmos sound. Customers that currently own content set for an Atmos upgrade will receive the updated versions free of charge. iTunes and Vudu will get Atmos support at launch, with Netflix to follow at a later date.
tvOS 12 also brings new methods of authentication for Apple TV, whereby customers can use the Face ID or Touch ID features of their iPhone to log in to services on their Apple TV, using the Siri Remote’s Bluetooth connection. The “TV” app will also be updated with a “zero sign-on” feature, which logs users in automatically when it detects that the Apple TV is connected to their private home network.
Other new features include Ultra HD and HDR screensavers created in partnership with NASA.
