Samsung Patent Shows “Self-Healing” Film for Foldable Smartphone Displays

A Samsung patent has emerged detailing a “self-healing” display for use in a foldable smartphone — no coincidence, considering such a device has been in development over at Samsung for several years.

The application says that the anti-fingerprint film is made of a polyrotaxane, polyhedral silsesquioxane and fluorinated (meth) acryl compound, which can apparently be applied seamlessly to a smartphone display. “The film may be self-healed after being scratched and has excellent flexibility, and thus may be applied to a flexible device,” Samsung says in the filing.

At a press event the day after the Samsung Unpacked event, in which the company announced the Galaxy Note 9 and other devices but remained tight-lipped about the foldable smartphone, dubbed “Galaxy F”, Samsung CEO DJ Koh indicated that the device will arrive sooner rather than later, telling journalists, “We are almost getting there. It won’t take that long”.
