Following its expansion, AU Optronics’ (AUO) 8.5G 8B facility in Houli, Taiwan will reach full production capacity during the third quarter of 2018, according to Digitimes.
This is due to “growing demand for high-end LCD display products”, which surpasses the facility’s first-phase capacity, the publication said. Currently, the 8B fab outputs up to 77,000 substrates each month. Following the completion of its second-phase expansion, capacity for a further 25,000 to 30,000 substrates will be added, Digitimes’ sources revealed. There is also the potential for an additional third-phase expansion.
The sources also revealed that AUO has adjusted its strategy to focus more on panels for large-size TVs and other high-end display products, to keep up with their increasing popularity and the output of newer-generation fabs in China.
