Last year, it was announced that the World Cup 2018 is being shot and broadcast in Ultra HD and HDR for the first time ever.
More recently, Jeff Yurek, of quantum dot technology provider, Nanosys, performed an experiment to see how much of a difference these new features are making to image quality, posting his findings on colour quality and display technology specialist blog “dot color”.
Yurek used the main colours of the flags of the top 10 World Cup teams during the experiment, which revealed that only two of the flags were recreated accurately using the standard BT.709 colour space.
He commented, “This means fans with wide colour gamut sets will finally be able to see their county’s colours in their full glory when viewing a 4K HDR broadcast.”
On non-HDR TV sets, colours that fall outside of the range of the BT.709 colour space can appear desaturated on-screen.
