Amazon Releases UHD Streaming Media Player with Alexa Voice Control

Amazon has announced Fire TV Cube, a hands-free Ultra HD streaming media player with built-in Alexa voice control. The device uses multi-directional infrared technology, cloud-based protocols and HDMI CEC that — combined with Alexa — let users control compatible TVs, sound bars, A/V receivers, and cable or satellite boxes. The box supports HDR10 but not Dolby Vision.

Amazon Fire TV Cube also uses far-field voice recognition. Beam-forming technology combines signals from eight microphones to suppress noise, reverberation and competing speech to make sure Alexa clearly hears requests, even when the device is situated next to the TV.

Amazon Fire TV Cube is compatible with set-top boxes from top providers such as Comcast, Dish, and DirecTV. The device is available for pre-order, priced at $119.99. It ships with an IR extender cable and an Ethernet adaptor, scheduled for release on June 21st.
