Amazon has opened its first checkout-free supermarket to the Seattle public on Monday, following a year of trial operation, where the store was accessible only to the company’s staff. (Amazon Tries No Check Out Shops)
Customers entering the Amazon Go supermarket use a smartphone app, scanning their devices as they enter the store. Ceiling-mounted cameras identify each customer and track which items they pick up. Once the user leaves the store, the payment method attached to the app is billed automatically.
It has been said that the trial store experienced some teething issues, with cameras struggling to differentiate customers of similar body types, and items being moved around the store being enough to confuse the tracking software.
