BOE and Nubia Unveil Unique Under-Display Camera Display for Red Magic 10 Pro Gaming Smartphone

The Red Magic 10 Pro is an upcoming gaming smartphone that lays claim to being the world’s first under-display camera full-screen smartphone. The Red Magic Pro series is made by Nubia, a subsidiary of ZTE.

The phone has a 95.3% screen-to-body ratio. The display, developed in collaboration with BOE, is a 6.85-inch OLED panel with a 1220p resolution—branded as a “1.5K true screen”—and has a 144Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness reaches an impressive 2,000 nits.

The “Wukong Screen,” as the display is called, achieves the much vaunted nearly bezel-less design with ultra-narrow borders measuring just 1.25mm. A COP (chip on plastic) packaging process was used to achieve this border design. The companies claim that the pixel density remains consistent across the main screen and the area covering the under-display camera. Manufacturing of the display involved thirteen custom production processes, along with twenty specialized mask processes, and BOE claims that the display has the most backplane film layers in a display of this kind.
